Project Description

The proposed Acheilidh Wind Farm is located approximately 7.6km south-east of Lairg, Highlands. The project was ‘scoped’ for opinions on the future content of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The scoping layout presented a theoretical maximum of up to 20 turbines of up to 230m. The design was further be refined through the design and assessment process. The development will be above 50MW in capacity and therefore qualifies as a Section 36 project (under the Electricity Act 1989). Following refinement of the design, the proposed development comprises 12 turbines with a mix of tip heights. Information on how this refinement was discussed during the public events and will be fully recorded within the application.

Project Update – June 2026

Following a request from the Energy Consents Unit (ECU) further Additional Information has been prepared and submitted to provide details of the potential grid connection options for the proposed development, together with assessment of the potentially significant environmental effects associated with that connection, should the Scottish Ministers consider that the proposed development and the grid connection are functionally ‘one project’ for EIA purposes.

This information can be found on the website under “Additional Information – June 2026”

Application

Following the completion of the EIA Report, Energiekontor UK Ltd submitted an application to the Energy Consents Unit of the Scottish Government (the responsible authority for all wind farms above 50MW) in May 2024 to install and operate a wind farm comprising 12 turbines.

Determination is currently underway, involving all relevant stakeholders.

The application documentation relating to the above proposal is available to view on the ECU website at www.energyconsents.scot by:

– clicking on the Search tab; then,
– clicking on the Simple Search tab then typing Acheilidh into the Search by Project Name box then clicking Go; then,
– clicking on ECU00004528 and then clicking on the Documents tab then clicking the Application Documents tab.

Alternatively, all EIA documentation can also be viewed on this webpage.
